Sprouts are food

I purchased a sprout-starting “kit” from a vendor at the Homesteading Conference earlier this summer, which really amounts to some small, shallow plastic pans that fit together, as well as some sprout-friendly seeds. The idea of sprouts is that you grow plants very densely inside and then cut/use them on top of various dishes when they are a few inches tall. They are not only beautiful on the countertop, but they are honestly a delicious way to add a little more fresh green to almost anything.

I am also interested in potentially growing sprouts on a larger scale for chicken fodder, a super treat. But for now, the experiment is all for me (unsurprisingly, Steve is not interested in this project!)

The supplies are very simple. The colorful little shallow square pots are perfect for this purpose, because sprouts don't really set very large roots. The set is designed to work together and to also fit together into the larger black pan.  I filled four of the pans with potting soil and then used a fifth pan to firmly press the soil down.

Then I mist-watered the soil and densely planted the seeds in each.  In order below are radishes, peas, broccoli, and a mix.

You mist the seeds and then stack the little pans on top of each other (sprouts sprout best in darkness!), taking them down twice a day for a good misting.

In only a day or two, the seeds all sprout.  I then use the large plastic tray to cover them until they get to get 3-ish inches tall, again, misting twice per day.

These sprouts are good to go and will continue growing. I already have to shift the pan twice a day as they are so attracted to the large sliding glass door to the left.

Scrambled eggs with soft bacon bits, cream cheese and sprouts = yum!

Steve added sprouts to my eggs over medium this morning! (And yes, I prefer to eat everything I can with a large spoon despite Steve calling me a "Freak!" on a daily basis.)
