Newest hobby

We have such a wildly vibrant fiber arts community in Green Bluff. Dozens of ladies of all ages get together every week to spin yarn or work on knitting projects. Today Montana went to an all-day “Spin In” at the Grange, which is where a giant room fills up with busy spinning wheels and chattering women. The new yarn store in a barn just down the road from us not only sell yarn, kits, and supplies, but they also have a circle of comfy seating to host twice-weekly “Makers Nights/Days” for folks to sit and work on projects. These are social times, but also support times, where you can get answers and advice when you hit a snag (pun intended.)

Needless to say, this community of yarnies is just really special. Almost all of the ladies knit, but I just have not been interested in learning that skill. But I have had my eye on crocheting for quite awhile. Given my obsession with couch throws, I just feel like a granny square style afghan is right up my alley.

So last week I learned how to crochet. Or I should say, I learned a few crochet stitches. This way Montana and I can go together to some of the fun fiber activities.

The hardest part of learning this new hobby is realizing just how blind I really am these days, though you can’t let that prevent you from trying! The truly difficult part isn’t the stitches themselves, but rather reading a pattern and being able to translate that to the yarn.

It’s a modest start, but it is a pretty fun challenge. Please look for that afghan sometime around mid-2026!
