And then we have yarn!
One thing about that crafty daughter - she can work FAST! One day after dyeing the wool, and she has already produced this! Montana explains the process below:
These are what are called “Spun Singles” - Montana took the fluff and spun it into a single strand of color, like heavy thread. These are all twisted clockwise. This step took about an hour and a half.
This is called “Plying”, turning two strands into one strand of yarn. These are twisted counter-clockwise. Yes, there is serious technique here! This step took under an hour (spinning one-handed while holding her phone!)
This is the two-ply yarn that resulted from this process! Hand-dyed, hand-spun!
The groups are temporarily tied together so they don’t get tangled. This device is called a “Knitty Knotty”, used to prepare it for skeining.
Then you have to soak everything (helps set the curls and brings back some of the fluffiness and sets the twists), and then dry it and it’s done! Each fluff created about 50 grams of yarn.
And the next morning, here comes the gold yarn! What a wizard!
The final final! Corresponding granny squares coming “soon”. What a great birthday present experience!
